Toronto Man Embarks on Epic 30,000 Km Journey in Just One Week with a Rental Car

Imagine driving over 4,000 kilometers in a single day, only refueling twice during the entire week-long journey. That’s the astonishing feat that one Toronto man, Yuehao Huang, found himself facing on a recent road trip with his family. Setting out on a seven-day adventure across Montreal, Mount Tremblant, Ottawa, and Quebec, Huang was shocked to discover a whopping $5,900 charge on his rental bill from Avis upon returning to Toronto.

Despite having meticulously tracked his actual mileage using his iPhone, which totaled a mere 1,400 kilometers, Huang was accused by Avis of racking up a staggering 28,933 kilometers in just seven days. This excessive charge left him baffled, as it would have required non-stop driving at 180 km/h without breaks or sleep.

Determined to dispute the erroneous bill, Huang provided evidence to both Avis and his credit card company, American Express. After weeks of back-and-forth communications, it seemed that a refund was out of reach. Frustrated and at a loss, Huang turned to Speakers Corner for assistance.

Following our intervention, Avis conducted a thorough investigation and admitted to a data entry error that led to the excessive charges. They promptly issued a refund for the unwarranted mileage fees, acknowledging the inconvenience caused to Huang. Expressing relief and satisfaction with this resolution, Huang now advises other renters to always photograph the odometer before and after their rental period to avoid similar issues in the future.
