Professors from McGill University’s Faculty of Arts in Montreal have recently voted to authorize a five-day strike when needed. The decision, with an overwhelming 86% approval, came after 222 out of 254 eligible members exercised their voting rights, as announced by the McGill Arts Faculty Association.
Representing professors holding permanent or tenure-track positions, librarians, and contract academic staff, the union is currently in the initial stages of negotiating its first collective agreement, a process known for its complexity as various clauses are discussed.
In response to inquiries, McGill administration acknowledged the faculty’s right to organize under Quebec labor laws. However, they emphasized their dedication to continuing negotiations in a constructive and sincere manner despite the strike mandate.
