Montreal’s mayor rejected an emergency motion for the police chief to address serious allegations against officers from two police stations. The motion, proposed by Projet Montréal, aimed to hold Chief Fady Dagher accountable for allegations at Stations 21 and 39. Despite opposition from Mayor Soraya Martinez-Ferrada, Projet Montréal Leader Ericka Alneus emphasized the urgency of a response to recent disturbing incidents, including an officer allegedly urinating on a homeless person and another officer keeping a racialized citizen’s hair as a trophy.
CRARR’s Executive Director, Fo Niemi, stressed the importance of Chief Dagher addressing the allegations promptly to uphold public trust and police professionalism. However, the mayor and Ensemble Montréal opted to wait for the completion of ongoing investigations before the chief would provide a response to elected officials. The amendment also called for a closed-door session of the Montreal Public Security Commission to gather relevant information on Station 21’s allegations.
Alneus expressed concerns about a broader issue within the police organization and culture, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in light of the disturbing events at the neighborhood stations.
