Following a recent judicial recount, the Vachon riding in Quebec’s Montérégie region is poised to be claimed by the Parti Québécois (PQ), although the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) is currently contesting the outcome.
Stephan Fogaing, the PQ candidate, has emerged as the victor in this closely contested race in Longueuil, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the PQ government. Initially trailing behind Liberal candidate Affine Lwalalika by a mere 10 votes on Oct. 5, Fogaing’s request for a recount was granted by the Court of Quebec.
The PLQ has acknowledged the recount results and the revised vote tally in the Vachon riding, but has refrained from conceding victory to the Parti Québécois. Expressing their stance on social media, the PLQ stated that their legal team is currently evaluating the situation and exploring all available legal avenues.
Meanwhile, outgoing Vachon MNA Ian Lafrenière extended his congratulations to Fogaing for his victory by a slim margin of 3 votes in Vachon, emphasizing the significance of every vote in an election. Lafrenière, who secured nearly 21% of the vote on election day, acknowledged the close race and the impact of each vote cast.
Additionally, the Parti Québécois has also initiated a judicial recount in Champlain, located in Mauricie, where their candidate fell short by 191 votes to Conservative Adriana Szalontai. A judicial recount is set to commence at the Trois-Rivières courthouse on Thursday morning, as confirmed by the Quebec Court.
