Two Vancouver men had their motorcycles impounded and will have their licences reviewed after allegedly driving recklessly over the weekend.
The BC Highway Patrol says the men were spotted by an officer, riding in tandem on Highway 1 near the Cassiar Connector around 3 p.m. Sunday.
“As the police watched, both motorcycles allegedly crossed highway dividers, drove over painted medians, and lane-split through traffic without signalling. The two Vancouver men were pulled over in heavy traffic near the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge,” said a release by Mounties Thursday.
The officer reported that both motorcycles appeared to be missing their licence plates.
“That is completely illegal. A motorcycle must have a fender and a licence plate that is mounted vertically, with a light, at the rear-most portion of the fender,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.
When stopped, McLaughlin alleges that the drivers tried to bend their plates back into position —from horizontal to vertical — and “pretend they were that way the whole time.”
“It was not very convincing.”
Both men are facing a seven-day impound for stunt driving, six points against their driver’s licences, and $230 fines each for improper display of their licence plates.
One, a 23-year-old man, was also fined $368 for driving without due care. The other, an 18-year-old man, was fined $196 for driving without consideration and $109 for failing to display his ‘N’ sign.
The BC Superintendent of Motor Vehicles will also review their licence statuses.
