Officer ‘nearly struck’ by impaired driver: RCMP

Langley RCMP is reminding motorists to drive sober and obey speed limits after an incident Monday where an officer was “nearly struck” by a vehicle, police say.

It happened during regular speed enforcement taking place at the intersection of Robertson Crescent and 242 Street. An RCMP officer flagged down a driver travelling 93 km/m in a 60 km/h zone.

Police say the driver initially slowed before attempting to evade the officer.

Police say the driver swerved off the roadway to the right of the officer, accelerating to “well over” 100 km/h.

The driver has now received the following consequences:

“This incident highlights the very real dangers impaired and reckless drivers pose, not only to the public, but to police officers doing their jobs roadside,” Sergeant Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP said in a press release. “If you choose to drink and drive, you are not only risking lives, but you are setting yourself up to face serious financial and legal consequences.“
