VIFF Unveils Cinematic Extravaganza with 260 Films, Puts Korean Cinema in the Spotlight

Get ready for a cinematic extravaganza as the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) prepares to kick off its 44th season next month. With 170 feature films and 90 shorts spread across 70 screens throughout the city, this year’s VIFF promises to be a feast for movie lovers.

A highlight of the festival will be Spotlight on Korea, a new program showcasing the works of talented South Korean filmmakers. Festival director of programming, Curtis Woloschuk, is excited about the lineup, which includes six first features by South Korean directors, with three making their world premieres at VIFF. Woloschuk emphasizes VIFF’s legacy of promoting Korean cinema, with past success stories like Bong Joon-ho, and believes this year’s selection holds promise for international acclaim.

One of the standout films to watch out for is “Resurrection” by director Bi Gan, described as a bold and captivating portrayal of 100 years of Chinese history and cinema.

In addition to Korean cinema, VIFF will feature a diverse range of films, including the opening film “Nouvelle Vague” by Richard Linklater and Canadian premieres of titles like “Jay Kelly” starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, and “Father Mother Sister Brother” with Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver.

Beyond screenings, festival-goers can look forward to engaging live events and talks with industry leaders like Jenny Lumet and Janicza Bravo. Special Q&A sessions will also be held, including one with Marc Maron following the screening of “Are We Good?” directed by Steven Feinartz.

Ticket sales open soon, with screenings priced at $18 plus service charges. Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in the world of cinema at VIFF from October 2-12.
