BCGEU Unveils Strike Vote Outcome: What It Means for Members and Services

After weeks of anticipation, the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) is gearing up to reveal the outcomes of a crucial strike vote this Friday afternoon.

Representing approximately 34,000 public-service workers, the union initiated the vote in July following failed negotiations with the provincial government. Voting officially commenced on August 11.

BCGEU president Paul Finch highlighted the pivotal issues of contention, which included concerns over wages, remote work guidelines, and the necessity to update the existing contract.

Emphasizing the financial strain faced by BCGEU members, Finch sounded a warning about potential loss of skilled workers if wages fail to keep pace with inflation. Specifically, he pointed out the precarious situation of wildfire firefighters, deeming their $28 per hour compensation for hazardous work as one of the lowest among government employees.

In response to the impasse, the union presented a proposal to the government in July, seeking a two-year agreement with wage hikes for employees on the lower pay scale. In contrast, the government’s final offer comprised a 1.5 per cent raise in the first year and a two per cent increase in the second year, a proposal deemed unsatisfactory by BCGEU members.

The outcome of the strike vote is anticipated to follow a recent deal framework announcement between the Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU) and the government. Expressing disappointment in the HEU for agreeing to terms below inflation, the BCGEU criticized the move for undermining the collective struggle of public service workers in British Columbia for fair compensation and respect during negotiations.

Following the announcement of the vote results, the union foresees engaging with its employer to recommence discussions, regardless of the outcome, with the announcement scheduled for 2 p.m.
