As summer arrives on Saint-Denis Street, usually a bustling season for restaurants, a new challenge arises. With nearby Mont Royal Avenue now a pedestrian-only zone, foot traffic shifts away, leaving eateries on Saint-Denis struggling with empty tables and declining sales.
Restaurant owners voice concerns over the lack of parking and increased vehicle congestion, which deter both locals and tourists from frequenting the area. Elena Emilia Ascencio, chef and owner of Casa Azul, highlights the significance of Saint-Denis as a representation of the Mont-Royal Plateau, calling for more recognition and support for the iconic street.
Luis Walter Corcuera, a seasoned restaurant owner on Saint-Denis Street, shares the difficulties faced this summer due to disruptions caused by the pedestrianization of Mont Royal Avenue. He emphasizes the impact on businesses, especially with the setup on Saint-Denis Street that includes bike lanes and limited parking.
Unlike Saint-Laurent boulevard, which thrives on festivals and events, Saint-Denis lacks the same support according to owners, leaving them struggling to stay afloat. Calls are made to the City of Montreal for initiatives that would rejuvenate Saint-Denis and provide a platform for businesses like Casa Azul to flourish once again.
