Public Service Staff Strike Deadline Hits with Tensions High

The deadline for a potential strike by various public service workers in British Columbia, such as liquor store employees, college instructors, and municipal workers, has expired.

Paul Finch, president of the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) and chair of the public service bargaining committee, revealed that a 72-hour strike notice had been issued, allowing for strike action to commence as early as today.

The BCGEU represents approximately 34,000 members across sectors like social services, healthcare, education, government liquor stores, corrections, courts, and public administration.

A select group of union members, details undisclosed, are set to begin picketing today, with Finch scheduled to join the picket lines in Victoria, and additional lines in Prince George and Surrey.

The union decided to proceed with a strike vote following failed negotiations with the agency in July. After voting concluded on Friday, it was disclosed that 92.7% of members supported taking job action if deemed necessary.

In July, the union proposed a two-year agreement with wage hikes for lower-paid members, while the government offered a 1.5% raise in the first year and 2% in the second, a proposal which the union declined.

In an interview with 1130 NewsRadio, Finch mentioned the lack of communication from the government regarding a revised offer, leading to no discussions over the weekend.

Despite ongoing wildfires requiring firefighter attention, Finch pointed out that their average wage remains below the provincial average by 2.7%, highlighting the need for fair compensation.

Finch expressed hope for the government to re-enter negotiations promptly, emphasizing the importance of an improved mandate for constructive talks.

B.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Transit, Mike Farnworth, assured that essential health and safety services will be maintained in the event of a strike.
