“Montreal Honors Legacy: Iconic Ville-Marie Esplanade Renamed to Celebrate Former Mayor Jean-Doré”

The City of Montreal Honors Former Mayor with Jean-Doré Esplanade

The City of Montreal recently paid tribute to the late former mayor, Jean Doré, by inaugurating the Jean-Doré Esplanade. Situated on Robert-Bourassa Boulevard between Wellington and Notre-Dame streets in downtown Montreal, this new landmark honors Doré’s impactful legacy.

Serving as Montreal’s mayor from 1986 to 1994, Doré is remembered for his significant contributions to urban planning, citizen democracy, and cultural access. Current outgoing Mayor Valérie Plante highlighted Doré’s role in democratizing political institutions and decentralizing municipal administration, as well as his creation of iconic city landmarks like the Chinese garden and the Biodome.

The inauguration ceremony held special significance as the location, Robert-Bourassa Boulevard, symbolizes Doré’s vision and the Urban Plan implemented during his leadership. Mayor Plante emphasized that the transformation of this boulevard reflects Doré’s enduring impact on Montreal’s landscape.

Jean Doré, a lawyer and journalist, was a passionate advocate for social causes and co-founded the National Coalition for the Rights of Canadians (RCM) in 1974. His political journey, marked by a defeat in the 1982 mayoral race followed by successful election as city councillor and later mayor, exemplifies his dedication to public service and progressive ideals.
