Quebec Honors Legacy of Guy Rocher with State Funeral

Renowned Sociologist Guy Rocher, Key Figure in Quebec’s Quiet Revolution, to Receive State Funeral

The passing of Guy Rocher, a prominent sociologist hailed as a key figure in Quebec’s transformative Quiet Revolution, has led to the announcement of a state funeral in his honor. Born in Berthierville on April 20, 1924, Rocher, often referred to as the “father of Quebec sociology,” passed away at the age of 101 on Wednesday.

The Quebec government revealed on Thursday that the family had accepted an offer from Premier François Legault for a grand “national tribute” to commemorate Rocher’s legacy. Known for his significant contributions, Rocher played a pivotal role in shaping Quebec’s history by championing the democratization of education, participating in the drafting of the Charter of the French Language, and aiding in the establishment of CEGEPs.

Premier François Legault expressed his admiration for Rocher, describing him as the final architect of the Quiet Revolution, whose work has had a lasting impact on Quebec’s development. He emphasized Rocher’s invaluable contributions to education, French language preservation, and the secular nature of the state.

Rocher earned a master’s degree in sociology from l’Université Laval and a doctorate from Harvard, with his doctoral research focusing on the dynamic between the Church and State in New France. His profound influence on Quebec’s sociopolitical landscape and his dedication to advancing the rights of Quebecers to embrace their distinct identity are recognized and celebrated by many.

Amidst an outpouring of tributes, Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet shared heartfelt sentiments, highlighting Rocher’s profound impact on modern Quebec as a nationalist in sociology and a compassionate educator. Blanchet underscored the importance of upholding Rocher’s legacy, particularly in embracing the principles of a secular state—a core element of Rocher’s enduring influence.
