Metrolinx Projects Eglinton Crosstown LRT Launch in October, Revenue Trials Yet to Begin

Metrolinx and provincial officials have confirmed that the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, currently in its 14th year of construction and commissioning, will not be ready for passengers before October. This update was shared during an announcement about a station groundbreaking for the Scarborough subway extension, highlighting ongoing challenges in the commissioning process.

Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay explained that the system is undergoing rigorous testing and optimization before opening to ensure a smooth and reliable service. Issues related to HVAC, communications systems, and braking wear have been identified and are being addressed during this trial period.

The final step before passenger service can commence is a 30-day revenue demonstration service period, which has not yet started as of Friday. The exact opening date in October remains uncertain, with Lindsay emphasizing a gradual ramp-up in passenger service once operational.

Despite the delays and challenges faced, Lindsay and Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria expressed confidence in the project’s completion and commitment to delivering a safe and reliable service. Operational control of the Eglinton Crosstown line has been transferred to the TTC, with a focus on safety and customer experience paramount in the planning.

While the timeline for opening remains fluid, officials are prioritizing thorough testing and preparation to ensure a successful launch of the 19-kilometre, 25-station Eglinton Crosstown LRT.
