Linda Schuyler, the co-creator of the beloved TV series “Degrassi,” is taking legal action to stop the premiere of a documentary about the show at the Toronto International Film Festival. The lawsuit alleges that the film contains defamatory statements suggesting that Schuyler built her success by taking advantage of the young actors on the show.
Schuyler filed the lawsuit in an Ontario court, targeting the production companies behind the documentary, including WildBrain and Peacock Alley Entertainment. The documentary features former cast members who claim they were underpaid during the early years of the show, with one stating they received as little as $50 a day.
However, Schuyler refutes these claims, arguing that the actors were actually compensated fairly with a package that exceeded industry standards at the time. Both WildBrain and Peacock Alley Entertainment, the co-producers of the documentary, have not yet commented on the lawsuit.
The dispute raises questions about the portrayal of behind-the-scenes practices in the entertainment industry and highlights the ongoing complexities in the world of television production.
