Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Santander is making strides in his comeback journey to rejoin the team’s lineup. He has kicked off a minor-league rehab assignment with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, as reported by Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi. Initially serving as a designated hitter, Santander will soon test his skills in the corner outfield positions.
The 30-year-old player sustained a left shoulder injury on May 29, colliding with the outfield wall during a game against the Los Angeles Angels. This setback interrupted his debut season with the Blue Jays after signing a substantial five-year, $92.5-million contract as a free agent.
Despite facing hurdles, including lower back tightness during batting practice earlier this week, Santander’s determination remains unwavering. The Blue Jays prioritized his recovery, granting him extra time before his return to the field.
Before his injury, Santander’s performance was below par, with a .179 batting average, .577 OPS, and six home runs in 52 games. The team is hopeful that he can replicate his impressive 44-homer season with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024, contributing to their potential push for a postseason spot.
As the Blue Jays maintain a slim three-game lead in the competitive American League East over the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, Santander’s return could be a crucial factor in their playoff aspirations.
