“Ontario Liberals Set to Unveil Leadership Outcome As Calls for Fresh Race Surge”

Today, the Ontario Liberals are revealing the outcome of a crucial member vote on whether to proceed with another leadership race, a decision arising less than two years after Bonnie Crombie emerged victorious in the previous contest. Over the weekend, party members cast their votes during the annual general meeting held in Toronto.

Later today, it will be apparent if murmurs of discontent among party members regarding the election results have grown into a significant wave of support for potentially replacing Crombie. A grassroots group called New Leaf Liberals has emerged, advocating for a new leadership race, along with Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith, a previous provincial leadership contender, who has been vocal about the need for “renewal” at the helm.

Despite the mounting pressure, Crombie expressed confidence heading into the voting process, backed by the party’s executive council, her dedicated team, and the caucus.

According to the Liberal constitution, Crombie must secure slightly over 50 per cent support to retain her position. However, the New Leaf Liberals are pushing for her resignation unless she garners at least two-thirds support.

In the February election, the Liberals made gains in seat count and regained official party status. Nonetheless, they fell short of becoming the Official Opposition, and Crombie failed to secure a legislative seat.
