Tragic Vacation: Two Deaf Women from Montreal Killed by Train in Portugal

Tragedy Strikes as Deaf Community Members Killed by Train in Portugal

In a heartbreaking incident, two women from Montreal’s deaf community lost their lives while capturing photos near railway tracks in Portugal. Guylaine Boulanger, aged 62, and Elise Bénard, aged 66, were tragically struck by a train on Saturday close to Mesao Frio, located east of Porto.

Despite the train conductor’s efforts to warn and apply brakes, the collision was inevitable, leading to the devastating outcome. Reports from The Portugal Resident indicate that the women were in the company of two other friends during the tragic event, who fortunately escaped physical harm.

This tragic event adds to a recent string of misfortunes involving Quebecers in Portugal, as earlier this month, a fatal funicular derailment in Lisbon claimed the lives of 16 individuals, including a couple from Quebec.
