“From Hazard to Art: Montreal Sculptor Transforms Dangerous Trees into Stunning Masterpieces at La Fontaine Park”

In Montreal’s iconic La Fontaine Park, tired trees are getting a remarkable facelift, thanks to the creative hands of local wood sculptor, Lucas Besse-Dicaire. Utilizing only his keen eye, a chainsaw, and a vivid imagination, Besse-Dicaire is breathing new life into hazardous and worn-out trees as part of a rejuvenation project by the Plateau-Mont-Royal Borough.

Selected to participate after responding to a social media call for artists, Besse-Dicaire has crafted three striking panels of art, each open to interpretation. The sculptures depict scenes of children playing with seeds, a couple embracing, and a tribute to the ancestors, shaped like seeds to represent growth and renewal.

Reflecting on his inspiration, Besse-Dicaire reminisces about his childhood spent exploring the park, climbing trees, and drawing from nature. His intricate staircase-like sculptures aim to honor the trees by giving them a second life, allowing visitors to appreciate the enduring essence of these once-diseased trees.

Joined by his son, Sovan Lemay Beauvais, who assists in refining the details, Besse-Dicaire’s work has captivated the attention of Montreal residents and visitors alike. Witnessing the evolution of these artistic creations, onlookers are inspired by the transformation taking place in the park.

As Besse-Dicaire looks ahead to future projects in the area, he encourages everyone to visit La Fontaine Park, soak in the art, and connect with the rich history of the trees. His passion for the park and dedication to its revitalization serve as a beacon for others to appreciate and engage with art and nature in their own lives.
