BCGEU Intensifies Strike: Correctional Officers and Sheriffs to Halt Overtime Amid Labor Dispute

The president of a union representing public service workers in British Columbia has taken a bold step by implementing an overtime ban for correctional officers and sheriffs. Paul Finch, the leader of the BC General Employees’ Union, revealed this strategy in an interview, hinting at additional measures to intensify pressure on the government and push for renewed negotiations.

Not stopping there, the union has also put an overtime ban in place at various Liquor Distribution Branch warehouse sites, marking a significant ramp-up in their job action efforts. This move comes as part of a broader campaign that includes pickets held across the province, now in its third consecutive week. The primary demand from union members is a wage increase of 8.25% over the next two years to combat rising living expenses and address other pressing concerns.

On a parallel note, B.C. Finance Minister Brenda Bailey disclosed that the provincial projected deficit has surged to a staggering $11.6 billion for the initial quarter of the 2025-2026 fiscal year. This spike is attributed largely to the removal of the carbon tax and the prevailing “global trade uncertainty.” Despite this financial setback, Finch emphasized that the union’s stance in negotiations remains steadfast and unaffected by the latest deficit figures.
