Ontario Police Chiefs Support Speed Cameras for Safer Roads
Ontario’s police chiefs are voicing strong support for the use of speed cameras as a tool to enhance road safety. The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police emphasized today that automated speed enforcement cameras are proven to be effective in curbing speeding violations, allowing law enforcement to allocate resources towards other critical safety initiatives.
Expressing concerns over Premier Doug Ford’s proposal to eliminate speed cameras throughout the province, the association highlighted the vital role these cameras play in improving traffic safety and reducing the burden on police officers.
Echoing this sentiment, municipalities across Ontario have urged the Premier to reconsider his decision, warning that removing the cameras could jeopardize pedestrian safety.
In response to recent incidents where 17 speed cameras were vandalized in Toronto, Premier Ford criticized the use of these devices, labeling them as a mere revenue collection method. He suggested alternative measures such as prominent warning signs, flashing lights, speed bumps, and roundabouts as more effective means to deter speeding.
A recent study conducted by SickKids and Toronto Metropolitan University in July revealed that speed cameras led to a significant 45% reduction in speeding violations in Toronto.
