“François Legault Shrugs Off Backlash as Maïté Blanchette Vézina Exits Stage”

Quebec Premier Unfazed by MNA’s Departure and Pushes for Regional Development

Quebec Premier François Legault downplayed the recent exit of Rimouski MNA Maïté Blanchette Vézina from the CAQ caucus, citing it as a common risk in government reshuffles.

During a radio interview on “Des matins en or,” Legault addressed Blanchette Vézina’s departure and her call for his resignation, emphasizing the importance of teamwork within the government. Despite her criticisms of the CAQ’s regional policies, Legault defended his commitment to supporting Quebec’s regions.

Legault, on his inaugural trip to Abitibi-Témiscamingue as regional minister, made headlines by expelling CAQ member Pierre Dufour for suggesting he might resign if not appointed to the cabinet. The premier stressed the need for unity within the caucus and highlighted his close economic monitoring of Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

During his visit, Legault announced a significant development project with Hydro-Québec, granting 25 megawatts to the Odyssey mine at the Canadian Malartic complex. This initiative is expected to create 1,600 high-paying jobs in the region, aligning with the government’s focus on clean energy and economic growth.

The premier, accompanied by his new Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, Jean-François Simard, and local MNAs, emphasized the government’s goal to double electricity production by 2050 as part of its regional economic stimulation strategy.
