Toronto Clears Homeless Encampment Amid Public Outcry for Permanent Housing Solutions

The City of Toronto Completes Removal of Homeless Encampment at Dufferin Grove Park

The City of Toronto has resolved the issue of a homeless encampment at Dufferin Grove Park, concluding the operation as a small group of residents persisted in demanding permanent housing before vacating the site.

This morning, city vehicles were observed clearing tents and personal belongings from the park, accompanied by city security and law enforcement officials. Caution tape cordoned off the encampment area while city staff installed a fence around the site.

Recent weeks had seen escalating tensions between encampment residents and municipal authorities following the issuance of trespass notices and the subsequent push to clear the park. Throughout this period, supporters and advocates rallied at the park to oppose the city’s eviction measures.

In response to the situation, the city’s outreach teams and community service partners extended offers of indoor accommodations, housing options, and additional support services to those still residing in the park situated in western Toronto.

Mayor Olivia Chow reported on Friday morning that 70 individuals from the Dufferin Grove encampment had been relocated to shelters, with nine others successfully transitioning into permanent housing. However, a small number of individuals remained steadfast in their decision to stay put.

Mayor Chow emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of homelessness by advocating for the construction of affordable housing and safeguarding individuals against unwarranted evictions. This integrated approach signifies the city’s commitment to tackling homelessness effectively.
