White Rock Decides: Voters Turn Out for Pivotal By-Election Today

White Rock Residents Show Strong Turnout for By-Election

White Rock residents showed up in large numbers at polling stations on Saturday for the municipal by-election aimed at filling two vacant positions on the city council. The vacancies were left by Ernie Klassen, who now serves as the MP for South Surrey-White Rock, and Michele Partridge, who resigned due to health reasons.

Voters at the White Rock Community Centre polling station expressed their concerns about issues such as the city’s homeless population, the growing number of high-rises, and the need for improved street cleaning.

Diana shared, “We want more transparency, integrity, and a cleanup effort on Marine Drive; it’s currently in a sorry state.”

Dave added, “Many feel there are too many high-rises. Let’s see what the new councillors can accomplish.”

With 21 candidates on the ballot, including local business owners and community advocates, residents could also cast their votes at the Centennial Arena and the Kent Street Activity Centre.

The by-election is taking place amidst discussions about White Rock’s identity, with a recent petition suggesting amalgamation with Surrey due to alleged transparency issues within White Rock’s leadership. The idea garnered nearly 600 votes but some residents strongly oppose it.

Katherine stated, “It’s absurd to merge with Surrey without consulting residents.”

Yvonne highlighted White Rock’s unique charm, saying, “It’s small-town yet vibrant, offering a variety of activities that set it apart from neighboring cities.”

MLA Trevor Halford of Surrey-White Rock acknowledged the challenges the new councillors will face and expressed his readiness to collaborate with them.

The election results will be available on the city’s website on Oct. 1, with an inaugural council meeting scheduled for Oct. 20.
