Montreal Police Charge Yacht Captain Following Tragic Drowning of Tourist on St. Lawrence River in 2024

The trial of a yacht captain began on Tuesday concerning a tragic incident that occurred on the St. Lawrence River last summer.

According to Montreal police, on the night of July 6, 2024, a group of 20 individuals were enjoying an outing on a yacht when at approximately 9:15 p.m., a 33-year-old tourist from Colombia tragically fell into the river near the Jacques Cartier Bridge and lost his life.

Sadly, the tourist was not equipped with a life jacket, and it took three days for authorities to recover his body close to Promenade-Bellerive Park in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve area.

Following an inquiry, the SPVM discovered several violations related to the yacht and its captain.

The 62-year-old captain was apprehended by Montreal police on May 6, 2025, but was subsequently released on certain conditions and a commitment to appear in court at a later time.

Eventually, on Sept. 30, he was formally accused of criminal negligence resulting in death.
