Montreal’s public transit system continues to face disruptions as nearly 2,400 STM maintenance workers enter the final day of their rotating strike. The strike, ongoing since September 22, has impacted metro and bus services citywide, with no resolution in sight.
During strike days – Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays – metro trains operate within limited time slots, causing inconvenience for commuters outside of these hours. Bus services have also experienced delays and interruptions due to reduced maintenance capacity.
The strike stems from prolonged negotiations between the union and STM management on issues such as wages, subcontracting, and workplace conditions. Despite mediation attempts over the weekend, the two sides remain at an impasse, prompting the STM to consider involving a neutral third party to facilitate discussions.
The possibility of service cuts looms if an agreement is not reached soon, as updating work conditions is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the transit system. The union remains open to negotiation but criticizes the STM for alleged lack of commitment to the talks.
While the rotating strike is set to conclude on Friday, the potential for further disruptions remains. Commuters are advised to stay informed through STM’s official channels for the latest updates on service schedules.
