In the wake of a recent tragic attack on a synagogue in the UK, a leading Canadian Jewish organization is urging leaders at all levels to prioritize security measures at synagogues. The incident in Manchester on Yom Kippur resulted in two fatalities and three people being hospitalized, with authorities labeling it as an act of terrorism.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs has specifically reached out to Prime Minister Mark Carney, emphasizing the crucial need for protection of Jewish institutions and the accountability of those responsible for inciting violence against Canadians. Carney, echoing this sentiment, highlighted the importance of addressing hate with every available means and ensuring that Jewish communities in Canada are safeguarded from intimidation.
Following the attack, various police services in Canada, notably in Ottawa and Toronto, have intensified patrols near Jewish establishments as Yom Kippur observances took place. Additionally, the government’s recent introduction of hate crime legislation aims to establish new offences targeting activities that obstruct or intimidate at places of worship, contributing to a comprehensive approach to combatting such incidents.
