Thousands of students in Montreal are gearing up to make their voices heard in support of Palestinians in Gaza. The student strike, set to take place on Monday and Tuesday, marks the second anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel.
Over 46,000 students from at least 59 CEGEP and university student associations have already approved strike mandates, with more expected to join in by October 7, potentially bringing the total number of striking students to over 81,000, as reported by the Association des étudiantes et étudiants de la Faculté des sciences de l’éducation de l’UQAM (ADEESE).
The student movement has been spurred by a call from the Disinvest in Palestine (D4P) collective and the Convergence of Anti-Capitalist Struggles (CLAC), highlighting a united front of support for the rights and liberation of the Palestinian people.
Fanny Harnois, a secondary education student with the ADEESE, emphasized the significance of the student participation, stating, “The number and diversity of students joining the strike showcase the unwavering support of the youth for the Palestinian cause. It is time for us to take a stand and act.”
On October 6 and 7, students plan to demonstrate on campuses and streets, visibly rejecting complicity in genocide and advocating for the legitimacy of resistance, both in Palestine and locally.
