“Quebec Coroner Issues Urgent Call for 18 Lifesaving Changes to Shield Traffic Signallers”

Coroner Arnaud Samson has put forth 18 crucial suggestions to enhance the safety of traffic signallers, prompted by a tragic incident where one of them was fatally hit by a heavy truck.

One key recommendation is the adoption of technological solutions like temporary traffic lights to replace human traffic signallers. Another important proposal is to restrict the deployment of traffic signallers in areas with speed limits exceeding 50 km/h.

Additionally, Samson advises against using traffic signallers and construction site flaggers simultaneously to avoid potential risks.

The incident that triggered these recommendations occurred in Quebec City on July 6, 2024, involving a 60-year-old traffic signaller who was managing traffic and flagging at a construction site when a heavy truck struck him.

In line with ensuring road safety, the coroner also suggests that municipalities consider deploying police or photo radars in locations where traffic signallers are working, aiming to uphold the necessary safety standards for managing public roads.
