“Two Years Later: Montreal’s Jewish Community Reckons with the Echoes of October 7th Tragedy”

Two years have passed since the devastating Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, yet the Jewish community in Montreal is still deeply affected by the emotional and psychological toll of the events.

Robbie Segall, a Montreal resident, was visiting the West Bank when the attacks unfolded. With over 1,200 casualties in Israel and 251 hostages, the impact was profound.

Recalling the tense atmosphere during the initial days, Segall shared his experience, “The first day was very tense. I stayed indoors, trying to make sense of the situation, communicating with loved ones, and following updates.”

For Segall, the journey back home turned into a nerve-wracking ordeal. “While assisting neighbors with their children, I received a call from an unknown Israeli number, offering me a ride to Tel Aviv in 10 minutes. I hastily packed, bid farewell, and trusted a stranger to take me to safety.”

In response to the attacks, Israel launched retaliatory measures in Gaza, resulting in significant casualties among Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The impact on the Jewish community in Montreal has been profound. Michael, from Hillel Montreal, remarked, “There’s a shared sense of loss and trauma within the community. The repercussions have been challenging for everyone.”

Tragically, one of the victims was Ben Mizrachi, a young man from Vancouver attending a music festival near Gaza.

Segall expressed the ongoing impact of the tragedy, especially on university campuses, where Jewish students feel vulnerable and targeted due to their identity.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Segall found solace in the unwavering support of the local Jewish community, highlighting their unity as a beacon of hope in trying times.

Reflecting on the past two years, Segall mentioned, “While last year was incredibly challenging, the support and solidarity within our community have been a source of strength. We take each day as it comes, finding comfort in our shared resilience.”
