Québec Solidaire’s Guillaume Cliche-Rivard has accused the government of manipulating immigration consultations, claiming that decisions have already been made. Immigration Minister Jean-François Roberge has fired back, accusing his colleague of spreading cynicism and conspiracy theories.
During a recent Question Period at the National Assembly, Cliche-Rivard criticized the Minister of Immigration for allegedly reaching a decision before hearing from all relevant groups and experts. He asserted that the government plans to admit 25,000 permanent residents, despite ongoing consultations.
The consultations, focusing on immigration planning for 2026 to 2029, began last week. Roberge has expressed interest in lowering permanent immigration levels and is considering three options: 25,000, 35,000, or 45,000 immigrants annually.
Cliche-Rivard claimed that the government dismissed the 35,000 option because it was supported by the Parti Québécois. He suggested that choosing 25,000 was a strategic move to appear stringent on immigration.
In response, Minister Roberge refuted these claims, emphasizing that the final decision has not yet been made. He criticized his colleague for doubting the democratic process and engaging in what he called baseless conspiracy theories.
