Etobicoke’s Bloor Street Revamp: Province to Reopen Traffic Lane While Preserving Bike Paths

The government of Ontario is set to reinstate a traffic lane on Bloor Street West in Etobicoke as part of an ongoing legal battle surrounding the removal of bike lanes in Toronto.

According to official statements, the province will be restoring one lane of traffic between Resurrection Road and Clissold Road. This restoration will involve temporarily removing a bike lane in one direction to facilitate the construction process.

Transportation Minister Singh Sarkaria emphasized that this decision aligns with a court ruling preventing the removal of bike lanes. Once the project is completed, the revamped stretch of road will feature new protected bike lanes.

Premier Doug Ford’s administration is challenging a recent court ruling that invalidated its efforts to eliminate bike lanes on various Toronto streets. Despite this, Sarkaria reiterated the government’s commitment to progress and the reinstatement of vehicle lanes where feasible.

The upcoming construction is scheduled to commence on October 20 and is estimated to cost $750,000. This development underscores the ongoing debate between prioritizing vehicle lanes and enhancing cycling infrastructure in urban areas.
