The Government of Canada is celebrating the effectiveness of its national strategy against auto theft, highlighting significant wins in preventing vehicle theft, recovering stolen cars, and dismantling criminal networks.
Officials credit the success of the plan to collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies, industry partners, and provincial governments. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree emphasized the impact of these partnerships in reducing auto theft rates and disrupting organized crime operations that plague communities.
The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported a notable achievement in intercepting 2,277 stolen vehicles in 2024, a 25% increase from previous years. In the ongoing efforts in 2025, CBSA officers have already prevented the illegal export of 1,185 stolen vehicles valued at $84 million.
One key initiative highlighted in the government’s strategy is the sharing of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) data with external partners like Équité and Carfax. Additionally, Quebec has received funding to enhance intelligence sharing between local law enforcement and CBSA for swift actions on stolen vehicles apprehended at ports and rail yards.
To further fortify measures against auto theft, the government has ramped up inspections on export cargo containers using advanced RCMP technology. High-risk port facilities in Vancouver, Montreal, and Halifax are also undergoing targeted security evaluations.
Moreover, the government has allocated grants to support 8 projects by Canadian companies aimed at developing innovative solutions to prevent vehicle theft.
Recent data from Équité Association indicates a national decrease in auto thefts in 2025, with a 19% drop in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2024. CBSA President Erin O’Gorman expressed confidence in the agency’s efforts to secure the supply chain, combat criminal activities at borders, and act promptly on law enforcement referrals.
The collective progress under the National Action Plan has spurred optimism among officials, who pledge to continue reinforcing partnerships and strategies to combat auto theft and safeguard communities.
