“B.C. High Schoolers Locked Out of Essential Classes, Teachers’ Association Reports”

High School Seniors in British Columbia Struggle with Course Availability for Graduation
With the school year in full swing, Grade 12 students in British Columbia are facing challenges securing the necessary credits to graduate. In busier districts like Surrey, students are finding it increasingly difficult to enroll in required classes as seats fill up quickly.

Violette Baillargeon, the 2nd vice president of the Surrey Teachers’ Association, expressed concerns over the lack of space in schools, particularly highlighting the issue in Surrey. She emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that the number of students learning in portable classrooms in Surrey could form the second-largest school district in the area.

While specific numbers were not provided, Baillargeon pointed out that the shortage of classroom space is more pronounced in competitive courses, such as sciences. Students are struggling to access essential classes needed for graduation, which could impact their chances of getting into universities.

To cope with the limitations, some students are exploring alternative options like enrolling in hybrid classes that combine in-person and online learning, or opting for fully online courses. However, these alternatives pose challenges, especially in subjects like lab sciences.

Baillargeon raised concerns about the disparity in students’ preparedness for online learning, emphasizing that many thrive in traditional, in-person classroom settings where they can interact with teachers and receive real-time feedback.

She stressed the importance of a conducive learning environment for students during this critical phase of their education, where grades can significantly impact their post-secondary opportunities.

Baillargeon proposed that increased funding from the provincial government is necessary to address the capacity issues in overcrowded school districts and create more opportunities for students to access essential courses.
