The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has announced a shift in their strike strategy, opting for rotating strikes instead of a nation-wide walkout.
The union’s President, Jan Simpson, revealed this change in a news release on Thursday night, setting the transition to rotating strikes for Saturday, October 11, at 6 AM local time.
Simpson emphasized the importance of this move, stating, “While this will kickstart the movement of mail and parcels, we remain committed to securing fair collective agreements and safeguarding a robust public postal service.”
Acknowledging the gravity of the decision, Simpson added, “The choice to shift from a nation-wide strike was not made lightly. Our postal workers would much prefer to negotiate new collective agreements and continue delivering mail without resorting to strike actions.”
The specific locations and schedules for the rotating strikes will be communicated to the affected members closer to the time of the planned actions, as detailed in the statement.
