Montreal’s Sud-Ouest Engulfed: Firefighters Tackle Dual Blazes in Morning Inferno

Montreal firefighters tackled two separate fires in the city’s Sud-Ouest neighborhood on Friday morning.

The first incident was reported at 1:10 a.m. at a building on Hadley Street near Cardinal Street, where a three-alarm fire broke out. Approximately 80 firefighters responded to the scene. The building, which was empty due to renovations, prompted the evacuation of neighboring buildings. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but four families had to be relocated with the assistance of the Red Cross.

Later in the morning, another three-alarm fire was reported on Wellington Street near de la Sucrerie Street. Over 80 firefighters were still engaged in battling the flames at a three-story residential building at 10 a.m. Fortunately, adjacent buildings were spared from any damage.

Approximately 15 individuals were evacuated, with one person requiring hospitalization for smoke inhalation, according to SIM spokesperson, Émilie Barbeau-Charlebois. There is currently no evidence suggesting a connection between the two fires, and investigations are underway to determine the causes.

In correlation with these incidents, the SIM is emphasizing the importance of fire prevention during Fire Prevention Week. Montreal residents are encouraged to ensure their smoke detectors are functional and ready to provide early warnings in case of emergencies.
