Montreal is in full swing with its winter snow removal efforts as crews hit the streets early Friday morning to clear the city after the recent snowfall, which blanketed the area with around 14 to 17 centimetres of snow in the past few days.
The city is placing a strong emphasis on clearing sidewalks and promptly lifting parking restrictions once the snow removal process is finished.
As reported by Environment and Climate Change Canada, Montreal is currently covered with 18 centimetres of snow, a significant increase from the previous 3 centimetres.
With over 3,000 workers and 2,500 trucks mobilized, Philippe Sabourin, the city’s spokesperson, stated, “We have a dedicated team on the ground to manage the snow removal operation effectively.”
The operation is expected to span four days, starting early Saturday morning at 7 a.m., and city officials are urging residents to assist in ensuring a smooth process. Boroughs have been granted permission to commence snow removal immediately in designated areas such as reserved lanes, drop-off zones, school zones, and bike paths.
Sabourin emphasized the importance of cooperation from the public, stating, “It is crucial for residents to move their vehicles at the designated times to avoid delays. Having to tow up to 50 cars per hour is not efficient for the operation.”
To assist residents in finding alternative parking options, the city has provided a list of more than 1,000 free overnight parking spots on its website.
