A Quebec-based group is calling on Ottawa to ban social media use for children under 16, launching a petition that’s quickly gaining political attention.
The citizen-led movement, Age Standard, wants the federal government to pass legislation preventing minors from creating social media accounts, along with enforcement measures to ensure platforms comply.
The group is also urging the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to oversee the rules, arguing companies themselves should not be responsible for enforcement.
The push comes as the Liberal Party of Canada signalled support earlier this month for setting 16 as the minimum age for social media use.
Supporters of stricter rules point to growing concerns about the impact of social media on youth mental health. In a recent U.S. case, courts found tech companies including Meta Platforms and YouTube liable in a lawsuit over social media addiction, ordering millions in damages.
Canada is not alone in considering tighter restrictions. Australia has already moved to block children under 16 from accessing social media platforms, while federal officials in Ottawa say several policy options remain under review.
