Service resumes after pepper spray incident at Mont-Royal metro station

Montreal police are investigating a pepper spray incident that prompted an evacuation at Mont-Royal metro station Thursday morning.

Authorities say several 911 calls were received around 7:50 a.m. reporting a possible use of pepper spray inside the station. Officers arriving on scene found multiple transit users coughing, prompting a temporary evacuation to ensure safety.

Urgences-santé confirmed that two people were evaluated; one was sent to the hospital in a more severe, yet stable, condition.

Police confirmed one man was arrested, but it remains unclear whether he is a suspect or a victim. Investigators are also looking into reports of an altercation between individuals, though it is not yet known if it is connected to the incident.

STM told CityNews that service has resumed on all four metro lines. It said the disruption was caused by hazardous materials, identified as pepper spray.

The investigation is ongoing.
