The Quebec Office of the French Language says most businesses in the Greater Montreal area are complying with rules requiring service in French, following an inspection of nearly 1,000 establishments.
The operation targeted businesses along major commercial streets, including Taschereau Blvd., Laurentides Blvd. and the Latin Quarter, to assess whether customers can be served and informed in French.
The Office found that French-language service was available in 98 per cent of businesses visited. French was clearly predominant on 92 per cent of outdoor signage, while compliance rates reached 89 per cent for invoices and 87 per cent for payment terminals.
Overall, 23 per cent of businesses, or 217 establishments, were found to have at least one element requiring correction.
Officials say those businesses have been contacted and supported in making changes, with about 70 per cent of corrections already completed.
The Office says it will continue increasing inspections, noting it received more than 10,000 complaints over the past year related to the Charter of the French Language.
