Four people have been arrested following a break-in and major police operation in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville on Montreal’s South Shore.
Longueuil police say officers were first called to a residence on Cadieux Street around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a break-in. Police say items were allegedly stolen from the home.
A 51-year-old woman was arrested at the scene.
During the operation, officers located three additional suspects who had allegedly taken refuge inside a building on Durham Street. Police then established a security perimeter in the area, closing Durham Street between Crémazie and Garneau streets.
Two other women, aged 34 and 35, were later arrested in connection with the alleged break-in.
Police said a fourth suspect initially remained barricaded inside the building while tactical officers worked to negotiate a peaceful surrender.
In an update issued shortly after midnight Thursday, Longueuil police confirmed the tactical intervention group used irritant gas to locate the final suspect before arresting a 31-year-old man.
The man was affected by the gas and transported to hospital as a precaution.
Police say four people in total were apprehended in the case.
Investigators believe the incident was targeted. No injuries were reported, and authorities say the situation is now under control and streets in the area have reopened.
The investigation remains ongoing.
