Vancouver outdoor pool and beach season begins

Starting Saturday, Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will open two outdoor pools and staff lifeguards to nine swimming beaches for another summer season.

Both New Brighton and Second Beach pools will open their lanes for swimmers.

From Saturday until Sept. 7, lifeguards will supervise the swimming areas of Spanish Banks West, Spanish Banks East, Jericho, Locarno, Kitsilano, Sunset, English Bay, Second, and Third beaches.

Supervised swimming areas will be marked by red and yellow flags from noon to 8 p.m. daily. These hours will change later in the summer season as days become shorter.

Spray parks will also open to the public until Sept. 30, operating between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Also starting this weekend and running until Sept. 30, adults over the age of 19 will be able to bring and consume alcohol at some beaches between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Alcohol is allowed at Jericho Beach, Spanish Banks, Locarno Beach, Second Beach, Kitsilano Beach, John Hendry/Trout Lake Beach and New Brighton Beach.

Drinking is not permitted at English Bay Beach, Sunset Beach Park and Third Beach.

People can also get out and enjoy the water by canoeing, kayaking, rowing, dragon boating, outrigging, paddle boarding, surf skiing, windsurfing, small craft sailing, kit surfing, and boarding.

You can launch from Kitsilano Beach, Spanish Banks East, Spanish Banks West, and Sunset Beach. Sunset Beach does have strong currents and is busy with boat traffic and is not recommended for novice users.
