The Chilliwack RCMP says residents should secure their homes following a rise in break and enters in the city.
Many of the incidents involved unlocked doors, windows, and vehicles, police say.
Fifteen residential break and enters were identified between May 3 and 16 alone. Of these, only four involved forced entry, so the vast majority involved unsecured properties.
“Many of these incidents could have been prevented by taking simple steps to secure homes and vehicles,” said Cpl. Carmen Kiener.
“Residents play an important role in helping reduce crime in our communities.”
Police say they are working to identify emerging crime patterns and hot spots. As well, they are focusing on tracking repeat offenders.
Mounties encourage residents of the city to lock all doors and windows, even when they are at home. Vehicles, garage doors, and garage door openers should be secured, and valuable items should be removed from plain view.
Those planning to be away from home for an extended period of time should arrange for mail pickup and ask neighbours to monitor their properties. As well, they should consider using timers on their lights.
Anyone who sees any suspicious activity should report it immediately, the RCMP says.
