A highly anticipated night-time running event in Toronto, the GloToronto 5K, 10K, and half marathon, has left many participants disappointed and demanding refunds. Benjamin Khadem, eager to challenge himself, registered for the event attracted by its unique glow-in-the-dark theme and promised festivities.
Excitement turned to suspicion for Khadem as the race date approached and he received no confirmation email. Upon contacting the supposed bib pick-up location, Toronto’s Metro Hall, he discovered that no such event was scheduled to take place. Further investigation revealed that other participants were facing the same issue, with the race organizers unreachable and the event date mysteriously changed to October 4 at Sir Casimir Gzowski Park.
City permits necessary for the event were never obtained, and it was revealed that the website promoting the event had stolen photos and videos from a U.S. event. Toronto Police are now investigating claims of fraud related to GloToronto, though no arrests have been made yet.
Amidst the chaos, Khadem and his friend took matters into their own hands, organizing their private half marathon on the original race day. Reflecting on the experience, Khadem emphasized the importance of ensuring the legitimacy of future running events before registering.
