Communauto expands Into Montreal’s West Island through REM partnership

Car-sharing company Communauto is expanding its footprint across Montreal, adding hundreds of vehicles, launching service on Nun’s Island and extending its reach into the West Island through a new partnership with the REM.

The company announced Thursday it will add 450 vehicles to its Montreal fleet this year, bringing the total number of vehicles in its station-based and FLEX networks to more than 5,000 by the summer.

As part of a collaboration with CDPQ Infra, Communauto will deploy 26 new reservation-based vehicles near nine REM stations in the coming days, including Du Ruisseau, Bois-Franc, Pierrefonds, Deux-Montagnes and Des Sources.

Communauto founder and chief executive Benoît Robert said the initiative is intended to make it easier for residents to combine public transit with car-sharing services.

The expansion marks the company’s first significant presence in Montreal’s West Island.

The company also announced that its FLEX service will be extended to Nun’s Island with support from the Verdun borough. A new operating zone will be established in the centre of the island, allowing users to pick up and drop off vehicles for trips to and from other parts of Montreal.

Communauto said the FLEX zone in Pointe-aux-Trembles will also be expanded later this summer.

The company said it has added a total of 750 vehicles to its Montreal network since January, including 300 replacement vehicles and 450 net new additions.

According to a May 2026 customer survey conducted among 4,466 users, more than 90 per cent of respondents said they would recommend the service. The survey also found that 83 per cent of respondents do not own a personal vehicle, while 42 per cent said Communauto was the primary reason they sold a car or decided not to purchase one.
