RCMP plans to launch recovery of charter boat victims in Strait of Georgia

Efforts to recover the bodies in the Strait of Georgia after a charter boat capsized could start today.

The Richmond RCMP says on Tuesday, June 30, that divers are preparing their operation to look for the bodies of six people still unaccounted for.

The charter boat sank in open waters about 18 kilometres southwest of YVR on Sunday.

“Divers will have to utilize tools like underwater drones and certain technology and equipment to do that. So, they’re looking to do that in the next day or two here,” Cpl. Frank Bryson told 1130 NewsRadio.

“They got to have sort of good weather for that as well. And I’ve just been briefed that the location around where the boat sank is approximately 150 to 180 meters deep, which really complicates recoveries.”

Bryson adds that officers’ main focus will be notifying the families of the lives lost.

The identity of the six missing people has not yet been released, but authorities believe that the missing six people are four men and two women.

Meanwhile, two of the four rescued people, a 26-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, were able to leave the hospital, while another two, a 33-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, remain in the hospital in critical condition.
