Procession, ceremony Tuesday for fallen SPVM officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane

Montreal police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, who was killed in the line of duty in a shootout two weeks ago, will be honoured at a ceremony on Tuesday.

A procession of police officers and dignitaries will leave the SPVM headquarters on Saint-Urbain Street at 10 a.m. and make its way along René-Lévesque Boulevard to the Bell Centre.

As part of this commemoration, the Royal Canadian Air Force will fly over downtown Montreal on July 7 at around 10:15 a.m. The Casino de Montréal, the Biosphere, and the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge will also be specially illuminated in tribute to Benredouane on July 6 and 7.

There, a two-hour commemorative is expected to begin at 12:30 p.m.

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette is scheduled to be in attendance, as well Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière and Chantal Rouleau, the Quebec minister responsible for the Montreal region.

The procession and ceremony will be livestreamed on the SPVM’s YouTube channel.

Background:

The 34-year-old Benredouane, an SPVM officer since 2021, died June 22 in a shootout in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood. Civilian Michel Mizrahi, 68, also lost his life, as well as the 25-year-old assailant from Alberta.

Benredouane, the father of a young child with a second one on the way, became the first police officer killed in the line of duty in Montreal since 2002.

Two days after the shooting, his funeral was held at the Islamic Centre of Quebec mosque in Saint-Laurent. He was buried in Laval.
