B.C.’s police watchdog investigating ‘incident’ in Surrey

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) confirms it is investigating what it is referring to as an “incident” in Surrey Wednesday evening.

A caller to CityNews says the incident took place in the city’s Bolivar neighbourhood in North Surrey, but this has not been confirmed by official sources. Pictures taken in the area show a significant police presence near Ellendale Drive and 148 Street; however, the exact address of the incident is unclear.

Staff Sgt. Lindsay Houghton with the Surrey Police Service has referred all questions to the BC RCMP.

The nature of the incident is unclear.

The IIO is the civilian oversight agency that is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.

We have reached out to the BC RCMP, the IIO, and BC Emergency Health Services for more information, including whether there have been any reported injuries.

More to come.
