A $134-million renovation of the exterior of the Theatre Building is underway at Place des Arts.
The work on the building that houses Théâtre Maisonneuve, Théâtre Jean-Duceppe and Salle Claude-Léveillée is expected to continue until summer 2028.
In a press release, the Place des Arts said the purpose of the major project is to ensure the structural integrity of the building and the public safety.
The organization said inspections since 2018 showed an “advanced deterioration of the concrete cladding” and corrosions to the structure.
“Failing to act would have far more serious consequences for the integrity of the building and for public safety and would require protective systems and barricades to be installed around the Theatre Building and adjacent roadways—reducing mobility and the vitality of this key downtown area,” said Marie-Josée Desrochers, president and CEO of Place des Arts.
The organization said the construction work would have minimal impact on its summer programming with only hall closing for the duration of the project.
The iconic building was built in 1967 when Montreal hosted the Expo 67.
