British Columbia Expands Mental Health Support, Launches Involuntary Care Facilities in Surrey and Prince George

The government announced plans on Friday to establish two new treatment centers to provide specialized care for individuals facing severe mental health and addiction issues. A 72-bed facility will be set up in Prince George, while a 60-bed center will be developed in Surrey.

In Prince George, the treatment center will be housed in a former youth corrections facility on 1211 Gunn Road. The site is undergoing renovations to accommodate 60 existing beds and 12 additional beds for those requiring involuntary care. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2026, with the first phase of 24 beds expected to open by December 2027 and the rest by the end of 2028. The total budget for this project is $92 million.

The Surrey facility, located at 6833/6869 King George Blvd, will offer both involuntary care and specialized services for individuals with complex mental health and addiction care needs. The project has a budget of up to $57 million, with an anticipated opening date in the spring of 2028.

Premier David Eby emphasized the importance of providing specialized care for those struggling with mental health and addiction issues, stating, “Every person facing these challenges is someone’s loved one. These new facilities will ensure they receive the care they need to recover and rebuild their lives.” Minister of Health Josie Osborne echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for safe and responsive care for individuals in their most vulnerable moments.
