“Strikes to Persist: Nurses’ Union Welcomes Fresh Mediators in Ongoing Labor Dispute”

The BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) has announced that their strike will persist despite the government appointing special mediators to facilitate an agreement.

BCNU is pushing for substantial progress in resolving the issues prompting the nurses’ strike throughout British Columbia.

Recently, the B.C. government designated Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers to mediate in the ongoing job action of BCNU.

The appointment was made public before consulting the Nurses’ Bargaining Association (NBA). BCNU President Adriane Gear expressed disappointment, stating, “Nurses should not have to learn about critical negotiation developments through government announcements or the media. It undermines the trust crucial for advancing these discussions.”

Ready and Rogers step in as negotiations face hurdles in the midst of the escalating job action following nurses voting 98.2% in favor of a strike. NBA Chief Negotiator Jim Gould criticized the process, emphasizing, “This does not align with the principles of genuine bargaining in good faith.”

As the NBA readies for mediation, nurses are resolute in addressing wage concerns, staffing shortages, workplace safety, and the mounting challenges in the nursing profession. The strike will intensify over the weekend, with picket lines scheduled at Victoria General Hospital on Sunday, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on Monday, and the Royal Jubilee Hospital on Tuesday.

BCNU President Gear affirmed, “Nurses are escalating their actions because they are advocating for real solutions. While we are optimistic, we are also pragmatic. Until substantive headway is made at the negotiating table, nurses will stand united in pushing for the necessary changes in patient care and the nursing field.”
